Maintaining good foot hygiene is an important part of personal care. By taking care of your feet, you can prevent fungal infections like athlete’s foot and other common foot ailments that affect so many people. Step 1 – Clean Your Feet
It is important to clean your feet every day with warm water and soap. Avoid harsh soaps that irritate the skin and strip it of moisture. Hot water must also be avoided for the same reason. Scrub gently, and wash thoroughly. Take the time to scrub between your toes as well.
Step 2 – Dry Your Feet
Use a towel to dry your feet thoroughly. Avoid sharing your soap or towel with anybody else. Tuck the towel between your toes and dry the skin. Avoid wearing close fitting footwear till your feet at totally dry.
Step 3 – Apply Talcum Powder
A thin coating of talcum powder or some medicinal powder after washing and drying your feet is beneficial. This will help in the absorption of moisture and prevent excessive sweat from accumulating on your feet.
Step 4 – Wear Cotton Socks
Avoid synthetic material on your feet, as they restrict the flow of air. Cotton or woolen socks are the best choices, as they let your skin breathe. These materials are also absorptive, which makes the sweat more manageable. Choose footwear that you are comfortable in. If your shoes are too tight, your feet will sweat more. This makes the feet more susceptible to fungal and bacterial attacks.
Step 5 – Air Your Feet Regularly
When possible, remove your footwear and expose your feet to the air. This simple action is vital to freshening your feet and reducing the risk of any infections. When constantly covered, feet are more susceptible to several problems like smell, dampness, and itchiness.
Step 6 – Keep Your Toenails Short
Maintain your toenails. Use a nail clipper to keep them short and clean. This reduces the risk of ingrown toenails, which can be a painful condition. Keeping toenails clean is also an important part of personal hygiene. Regular pedicures are also a good way of maintaining the health of your feet.
Step 7 – Inspect Your Feet Regularly
As with other conditions, prevention of foot ailments is better than cure. Regular inspection of your feet will alert you to calluses, swelling, blistering, cuts, and blisters. These small conditions, if left untreated, can cause much more severe problems later.
Step 8 – Exfoliate and Moisturize
Soak your feet in warm water and use a pumice stone or exfoliating brush to scrub your feet. This will remove any hard, dry skin and keep the feet soft. Follow up with a mild moisturizer to keep your skin moist. Regular exfoliation will prevent the formation of cracked heels and calluses on your feet.
